Brood X Cicada Wing Necklace with Goldsheen Obsidian Skull
This necklace features wings from a real, ethically collected Brood X cicada, electroformed in copper with a gold sheen obsidian skull. She has an antiqued patina and hangs on an adjustable 14-18 inch chain. This piece is a celebration of the transition from summer into Autumn and honors the life cycles of creatures that grow, unseen, beneath our feet and emerge 17 years later to sing/ scream, mate, and die, captivating our human curiosity.
Metal: copper— an energy conductor and balancing force
Stones: gold sheen obsidian— protection, balance
Other symbolism: 17-year cicadas spend most of their lives underground, feeding on tree roots, quietly going through several transformations before emerging en mass one summer, molting into their final winged form, and spending their short adult lives “screaming” (a song to attract mates), mating/ laying eggs, and dying. This life cycle encourages us to appreciate the quiet growth and biding time before embarking in an exciting transition, and also to make the most of what short time we have. It’s a balancing act, but we can all get through it together, screaming all the way.
Note: Copper and copper-containing alloys like brass and sterling silver will change appearance over time and may react with moisture and body chemistry.
