3 Dimensions (Sculptures)
My sculptural works explore a variety of media and subject matter, ranging from environmentalism and social activism to introspective humanist pieces in everything from precious metals to found objects and a plethora of materials in between. Some of my favorite techniques include mold making and casting, soft sculpture, assemblage, and woodworking.
"Tuning Branch" (2017) found log, cast bronze, electroformed feather. Experimental interactive acoustic sculpture. The distorted shapes of the cast bronze tuning forks produce eerie and intriguing sounds when struck by the feather, encouraging the viewer to reflect on their relationship with nature. Is it in tune?
"Bloom" (2016) cast bronze and alcohol inks. A Self portrait of what it feels like being in Nature and allowing inspiration to flood in and produce budding ideas. A reminder that humans are part of nature and it is a part of us.
"Ripple" (2017) cast glass & hammered aluminum. Concept deals with the ripple effect and environmentalism, water scarcity, and points of no return. Do we have time to stop the ripples of our selfish actions?
"Heel" (2014) cast bronze. An audacious self portrait of feminine power. Made from a bronze cast of the artist's foot and hand flipping the middle finger, this piece embraces the indignation of a marginalized gender as well as giving an "F you" to beauty standards and behavioral expectations.
"Connect//Disconnect" (2018) steel, paint, clay, yarn. This piece features two "void" spaces on either side of the cube structure, each with a lonely figure within, the red yarn connecting them through a convoluted tangle that travels a vast distance. This piece explores mental health and the ways we are so inexorably tied to other people. Our paths wind far away, but out of sight doesn't always mean out of mind, and old hurts still pull at us from the past.
"Nest" (2014) wood, broken mirror, yarn, small plant leaves and flowers. This is a celebration of community and diverse bodies as well as empathy and environmentalism. We are all connected and can nurture life and creativity when we pour our energies into a common goal.
"Guardian" (2019) cast iron, gold paint, preserved moss. This piece is a reminder that we are part of nature and it is a part of us. Life on Earth is one spirit spread throughout many organisms, and it is our duty as humans to be Nature's protectors, rather than her destructors.
"An Offering" (2019) cast glass, gold paint, fresh orchid. Concept explores spirit and interconnectedness of beings on Earth. The natural world offers humans not only everything necessary to live, but also great beauty and moments of peace and inspiration. We should return that favor, taking care of other species we share this planet with, offering them empathy and good spirit.
"Plume" (2018) found artificial nest, wood, string. This piece is a play on a homonym, as it can refer to the feathery plumage of a bird or a plume of smoke. This piece is a commentary on pollution and the ways that birds are impacted by human actions.
"Flush" (2017) mixed media living sculpture made from a discarded toilet painted to resemble the earth orbiting in space. It is filled with draught resistant plants like cacti and succulents and asks the viewer to examine their relationships to both water and the earth as a whole. Are you treating this planet like a toilet? Are you flushing away the future of life on earth with selfish actions? Are you a victim of irresponsible corporations impacting your environment? We must all work together for environmental stewardship.
